Thanksgiving is near and you just might find yourself on the receiving end of hospitality. If so, does this bring joy to your heart? Or does it bring angst?
Have others’ small but meaningful acts of kindness provided you with a sense of comfort, protection, and blessing? I know I’ve been impacted by such touching examples of hospitality, especially in my travels overseas.
While living and working in Bulgaria, my family and I’ve been blessed to receive hospitality in so many life-impacting ways. Amongst my story are 7 unique and not-so-unique ways to offer hospitality.
- The Gift of a Simple Meal (see Acts 2:42)
- The Gift of Talent (see Ephesians 5:19)
- The Gift from Poverty (see 1 John 3:18)
- The Gift of Time (see Matthew 25:35 & 40)
- The Gift of Safety and Rest (see Leviticus 19:33–34)
- The Gift from a Stranger (see Romans 12:13)
- The Gift of a Smile (see Proverbs 15:13)
I originally wrote a version of this as a magazine article for Heart of Hospitality. The article went into closed countries so it could not mention God. Heart of Hospitality was gracious enough to allow me to rewrite the article as a Christian blog post to share it with you as well. If you’d like to learn more about their magazine click on the name of the magazine above.
And if you would like to listen to the full article adapted as an Embrace Truth Podcast episode to learn about the lessons God taught me from the 7 items, click on the audio file at the beginning of this blog. The episode is filled with God’s truth in action.
Although life can be a struggle at times, there is always hope no matter how dark it seems. And many times, hope can be found amidst a simple act of hospitality.
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some people have entertained angels unawares. —Hebrews 13:2, (esv)
May I encourage you this holiday season to offer both hospitality, and embrace it when you are on the receiving end. As you do, you’ll shine bright for the Lord.
Great news! Beginning January 28, 2026, The Embrace Truth Podcast will officially begin. Until then 2 special episodes will be released. This episode about hospitality for Thanksgiving and a special Christmas episode.
If this blog post blessed you, feel free to share it with a friend. I look forward to hearing from you.
